There has been a church on this site at least since the 12th Century, although as a result of later alterations, very few of the original Norman features remain. There is some evidence on the arch on the outside of the south door. More noticeable, is the Norman font.

The church is officially a “chapel of ease”, attached to St John the Baptist Mamble.  Records show that in the 1660’s, there was a move to close Bayton Church, but local protest led to both Mamble and Bayton churches remaining open, but as one parish. Bayton villagers could more easily reach Bayton Church than Mamble.

There are features in the nave that probably date from the 15th century, but the present appearance of the church is the result of work at the beginning of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
