Bayton for the next generation

Several architect's inspections, especially in 2009 and 2013, identified serious problems with the church building and it was put onto the "At Risk Register". In particular the roof was showing signs of age, the building suffered from a chronic damp problem and also lacked basic facilities such as running water, a toilet and a kitchen and so the project for "Bayton for the next generation" was born. The PCC voted in favour of this major renovation and improvement project in 2014.
An initial Heritage Lottery Grant of £26,000 made it possible to appoint an architect, to draw up detailed plans, apply for the necessary permission and to prepare a statement to justify an application for the full Heritage Lottery Fund grant of about £220,000 which was successful. Other generous grants and donations were also received for which we are very grateful.

The last service was held on the 26th June 2016 and the contractors arrived on site the following day. Good progress was made re-roofing the whole church - that is until bats and a sparrow's nest brought work to a halt for several weeks. An ecologist had to be present and changes had to be made to the material used to insulate the roof. Once work restarted, re-roofing was completed and the ceiling of the nave re-plastered. The interior of the church was repainted throughout.
The floor of the nave was dug out of the bedrock, revealing 6 graves and fragments of medieval tiles. New hardcore and insulation was installed and pipes were laid for an underfloor heating system.
From there on, work involved improving the facilities - the toilet, kitchen and the refitting of the vestry.
Difficult decisions had to be taken regarding the pews. In the end some pews were removed and chairs bought for the rear part of the nave leaving us with a much more flexible space than can still be used for worship but also for other community use.
